Abdullah bin Umar (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“I have been commanded to fight against these people until they bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, and give the zakah. Then, when they do that, their lives and their wealth will be protected from me, except by right under the law. As for their reckoning, that is upon Allah.” (Sahih Bukhari, No. 24)

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (RA) departed from this world, and after him, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) was appointed as his successor. Then, from among the Arabs, those who were to reject (Islam or its obligations) did so. So, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) said to Abu Bakr: “How will you fight against these people when the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has said: ‘I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (there is no god except Allah). Whoever says La ilaha illallah has protected his property and life from me, except for a right due upon him, and his account is with Allah’?”
When Abu Bakr heard this, he replied: “By God, I will certainly fight those who differentiate between prayer and zakat, for zakat is the right due on wealth. By God, even if they withhold from me a rope used to tie an animal which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will fight them for withholding it.”
Umar (RA) said: “By God, it was nothing but that Allah had opened Abu Bakr’s chest for that war (had granted him conviction and clarity regarding it), so I realized that this was indeed the truth.” (Al-Sunan al-Sughra, al- Nasa’i, No. 3059)

Anas bin Malik (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“I have been commanded to fight against these people until they bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and they face our Qiblah (direction in prayer), and they eat our slaughtered animals, and they pray according to our way.
Then, when they fulfill these conditions, their blood and wealth will become sacrosanct to us—except in cases where these are taken due to some rightful claim. They will have the same rights as Muslims have, and they will bear the same responsibilities that are placed upon Muslims.” (Tirmidhi, No. 2550)
